SWAMA Martial Arts National City brings the Beltran-lineage Muay Thai curriculum to Plaza Boulevard — bringing authentic training to South Bay families who shouldn't have to drive across the county for it.
Quality martial arts schools have historically been concentrated in North County and East County. National City families have had to choose between a long commute or a strip-mall option that calls itself martial arts but is really cardio kickboxing. SWAMA opened the National City location at 3403 E Plaza Blvd, Suite A, to change that — bringing the same 40-year curriculum that built our flagship Imperial Beach school to the urban core of South Bay San Diego.
National City is one of the most genuinely communitarian places in San Diego County. Multi-generational households. One of the largest Filipino-American populations in the United States. A working-family culture where parents look out for each other's kids. The Filipino-American Highway runs through the city. Plaza Bonita anchors the commercial corridor. Paradise Hills, Lincoln Acres, Sweetwater, and Bonita all sit close enough that the school serves families from across the South Bay.
The curriculum is exactly what's taught at the Imperial Beach flagship: authentic Muay Thai, structured for kids starting at age 4, scalable up to adult-competition level, and fundamentally focused on real martial arts skill rather than fitness-class entertainment. Kids learn discipline, confidence, anti-bullying skills, and respect. Adults learn striking technique, conditioning, and practical self-defense. Both groups train under instructors who came up directly through the Beltran methodology.
What makes the National City school distinct from the Imperial Beach flagship: it's the South Bay location, structured for working National City families. Morning classes for shift workers. After-school programs for kids whose parents work full days. Evening classes for adults coming from the Plaza Bonita area, Paradise Hills, or Sweetwater. Class times built around real National City households, not retrofitted from a suburban gym template.
If you live in National City, Paradise Hills, Lincoln Acres, Sweetwater, Bonita, or anywhere along the Plaza Blvd / 805 corridor, the school is here. Free VIP tour and trial class for anyone walking in.
